Ancient forces

Whereas many of the monsters in Middle-earth are little more than ferocious animals, such as Cave Trolls and Wargs, some of the most significant beings in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings originate from the farthest reaches of time. These monsters are bathed in dark magic and corrupted celestial powers. The Balrog, for example, was once a virtuous “angelic” being—a Maiar—who, alongside Sauron, was turned evil and corrupt by the Dark Lord Morgoth. Once a spirit of fire, by the time the Fellowship encounters the last remaining Balrog deep in the mines of Moria, he is a powerful demon of shadow with dragonlike wings, a whip of thongs, and a sword of fire.
